The '60's swings again (with a little help from 55MAX)

Posted on February 09 2015

The birth of British pop music, free love, Pucci prints, flower power, mini skirts and the 'mod'.

To banish the post war gloom, a flourish of new music, fashion and design made it's way into the 1960's and changed the world as we knew it. Yes, a revolution had well and truly begun and it was time to experiment.

It was the decade of groovy designs, with geometric patterns, bright colours and Andy Warhol; one of the biggest and most influential artist of the 60's. His pop art references to mass culture - think soup cans and images of Marilyn Monroe - crossed over into interiors, and on to wallpaper and posters. Similarly, black and white photographic prints and posters of icons were raised to a higher status in the art world - think Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger. Prints and posters started to become a popular and affordable way to incorporate art into decor, along with psychedelic patterns, which could be found throughout the home in wallpaper, art, curtains, and upholstery. Colours were also big on the agenda - think fuchsia pink and tangerine orange. Previous eras had similar popular colours, but it wasn't until the 60's that these colours became vibrant.

And luckily for us we get to experience this era all over again. Don't believe me? Just check out the March edition of Livingetc

If you want to take some inspiration from this, it's easier than you might think! Check out the print on the wall. Does it look familiar? Yes, that's Debbie Harry of Blondie and you can take home that exact black and white photographic print. And if you like the print above, well that could be yours too! The abstract painting by Joan Miro is called 'female torso' and is available to buy here: http://www.55max.com/products/female-torso-joan-miro . With it's strong colourful brush strokes, it fits perfectly with the 60's style - colourful and lively, it creates a bright atmosphere throughout the room.
