Marijuana Girl Art Print by Gerald Jenkins

For years I'd driven the coast road and marvelled in it's naive innocence. Occasionally I'd stop my car and photograph the decay of a mid 1950's holiday resort, observe the contentment of the locals in their pace and rhythm and concluded that it was anti capitalist without intent / The kitsch colour schemes romancing my vision.

I'd been asked to advise on a new magazine project and saw the possibility of great opportunities. Australia in all it's isolation was something to cherish, to photograph and allow others at distance to understand. This was my advice to the owners.

I chose to drive the coast road to Fingal Head. The headland being sulphuric rock/lava from Mt. Warning/Wulambiny Momoli. I also chose to photograph a young married couple Baz & Melissa. Baz had married Melissa when she was 16 which was two years previous. Melissa was a Texan who spoke like Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde. When I told them both the plan Melissa purred 'I just love road trips’. Getting them both in the car proved difficult though and we had to resort to dangling an ounce of weed in front of their hungry eyes. The t-shirt Marijuana Girl was her own and when she wore it on the final morning I realised she WAS the Marijuana Girl. I told her so and we shot the pin-up late that evening. - Gerald Jenkins
